The 11th EURO SUMMER SCHOOL ON EXOTIC BEAMS will be held at the
University of Surrey, Guildford, from 19 to 27 August 2004. The
preliminary School website can be found at http://www.ph.surrey.ac.uk/cnrp/euroschool04

Background: The School is intended for PhD students and young post-docs starting to work in the fields related to radioactive ion beams. It consists of six lecture courses given by specialists in the field, starting from a basic level. The School is an annual event, funded by the EU, that started off based at Leuven in Belgium. However, since 2000 it has travelled around various venues in Europe (Jyvaskyla, CERN, Valencia). This year it comes to the UK - note that it is not clashing with the UK postgraduate Summer School that runs in odd years. Each year, it attracts about 60-70 students from all over Europe. The production and use of energetic radioactive beams is a rapidly developing new field in Nuclear Physics, especially in Europe. Pioneering experiments are taking place, dedicated facilities are being commissioned and new facilities are proposed. Many workshops and conferences have been devoted to this new field and the senior scientists have ample opportunities to be informed on the latest developments. Ph.D. students and young post-docs encounter more difficulties to be introduced to this new area and to receive both the basic and the detailed information. The European Union has created the possibility to set up Euro Summer Schools where "the leading scientists are brought together with the youngest scientists in a specific field". Speakers for 2004:
Jeff Tostevin (Surrey) - Reaction theory studies of exotic nuclei Scientific Committee of the Euro Summer School: Local Organising Committee: Registration Deadline: 1st June 2004 EuroSchool email address: euroschool@surrey.ac.uk

Important Information: This summer school is supported by the EU, which will be covering costs of accommodation on Campus, breakfasts, lunches, an excursion and two evening receptions. But to fully cover costs we need to charge an conference fee of 250 Euros. This we are prepared to waive provided a supporting argument with appropriate justification is made. A limited number of travel bursaries are also available - see the application page for further details. Other travel costs and evening meals will remain the responsibility of the delegates.
Note that places are available only to residents of EU and associated

Special Topic: The public understanding of nuclear science This is a half day session devoted to teaching young scientists how to communicate their work to a wider audience, including a workshop on writing press releases. Speakers: David Reid (press officer for Institute of Physics), Marcus Chown (author, journalist). Student contributions to the Euroschool will be possible through presenting a poster, and we recommend you do so.
