RISING stopped beam meating, March 2004

1st ANNOUNCEMENT OF THE RISING 'STOPPED BEAM' PHYSICS MEETING University of Surrey, Guildford, UK, Mon 29 - Tues 30th March 2004

The first meeting to discuss the physics aims of the RISING STOPPED BEAM campaign will be held at the University of Surrey on 29-30 March 2004. The aim of this workshop is to provide a framework for the physics proposals for the use of the RISING gamma-ray array in conjunction with exotic ions produced following projectile fragmentation and fission, which are stopped at the final focal plane of the Fragment Separator (FRS) at GSI. It is anticipated that the physics areas of interest will include decays from exotic isomeric states in neutron-rich and N~Z nuclei; the use of isomer spectroscopy to determine the structure/shell structure evolution in heavy neutron-rich nuclei; beta-delayed gamma-ray spectroscopy of exotic nuclei along the r-process waiting point paths for N=50 and N=82; measurements of nuclear moments; fast-timing (BaF2) measurements of the transitions rates of excited states fed following isomer/beta decay; and fine structure in alpha and proton-emission. The meeting will also discuss the potential instrumentation needs for such a campaign, such as active stoppers for alpha, proton and beta-tagging.

It is hoped that the meeting will provide a platform for scientific proposals to be submitted to the GSI-EA sometime in mid-late 2004 with the plan of running the first experiments towards the end of 2005.

Accomodation for up to 30 delegates has been pre-booked on site at the University of Surrey campus in Guildford at cost of 38 pounds (~55 EUROS) for an en-suite room and 28 pounds (~40 EUROS) for a room with a shared bathroom. Both prices include breakfast on the morning of the 30th March.

Other, non-university local accomodation can also be booked directly and information on this can be obtained using the following web-site

http://www.mis.surrey.ac.uk/misweb/accomm/acmc10.htm

The University of Surrey at Guildford is in easy reach of both Heathrow and Gatwick airport and also has excellent trains links to London Waterloo Station for visitors travelling from mainland europe via the EUROSTAR. Information on how to get to Guildford by car, air or train can be found at the following web-site

http://www.surrey.ac.uk/corporate/visitors/directions.html

Short (~10 minute), contributions on potential physics areas of interest are encouraged. It is hoped that a slide report (in electronic format) will be made of the presentations for the workshop. The meeting will also provide a forum for an update on the initial results of the first FAST BEAM RISING CAMPAIGN experiments which took place at GSI earlier this year.

If you are intending to come to the meeting, please fill out the following reply slip and e-mail it to the Paddy Regan, the Stopped Beam Campaign Physics Co-ordinator at p.regan@surrey.ac.uk

A slide report from the initial meeting to discuss physics aspects with stopped beams from fragmentation reactions can be downloaded from the web at http://www.ph.surrey.ac.uk/~phs1pr/rising.

see you in Guildford,
Paddy Regan and Peter Reiter
