A PhD in physics is the passport to a career as a research scientist... but that's far from being the whole story! The PhD is a widely respected and highly regarded qualification which certifies that the holder is a highly competent, professional, self-motivated achiever. Holders of PhDs in physics are in high demand in areas ranging from engineering industries to finance. Newly qualified PhDs often report that their PhD research has been the most stimulating, rewarding and challenging thing they have ever done.

Quality in Research. The Department has over 50 PhD students and 60 academic and research staff, all actively involved in research in the areas of nuclear, radiation and medical physics, soft condensed matter, and semiconductor optoelectronics. The quality of our research was recognised by the award of a grade 5A in the Research Assessment Exercise 2001. Our research is strongly supported by the research councils, industry and through our exploitation of major international experimental facilities.

Interdisciplinary Research. Surrey physicists are key players in the University's interdisciplinary research institutes, including the Advanced Technology Institute and UniS Materials Institute, working closely with engineers, chemists, biologists and materials scientists.

Grants and scholarships. For suitably qualified UK students, EPSRC Doctoral Training Awards are now available, and cover both tuition fees and living expenses. Partial support for EU students is also available. Overseas students will need to apply for scholarships to pay for tuition fees and living expenses.
