The Department of Physics offers a wide range of top-class undergraduate and postgraduate training opportunities - either through taught BSc, MPhys, MSc degrees or through PhD research degrees. The Physics department is also a major contributor to the new Isciences degree.

The Department is recognised for its excellence in both research and teaching. The Department includes about 120 postgraduate students, studying for MSc or PhD degrees, and 60 academic and research staff. Postgraduates  represent roughly 40% of the Department's total student body, one of the highest proportions in the UK, reflecting the Department's strength in research. This strength was recognised by the award of a grade 5A in the most recent Research Assessment Exercise (in 2001). The high quality of teaching in the Department is reflected in the award of 23 out of 24 in the most recent Teaching Quality Assessment. But our best advertisement is undoubtedly our students, who enjoy excellent employment prospects whether graduating at bachelor, master, or doctoral level.
