They can monitor sea temperatures and tropical storms for example. Ground controllers select the areas of interest anywhere on the Earth's surface, check the time and position of the satellite using the on-board GPS receiver and instruct the on-board computer to collect the images using the 'diary' that is uploaded to it regularly.
