What's all the fuss about digital communications?

Digital technology is certainly flavour of the month, yet ten years ago hardly anyone had heard about it. Mobile phones, DVDs, satellite television, CDs and even bar codes rely on digital encoding of information. The information can be sent down optical fibres or transmitted as radio waves. So why is it supposed to be so much better than the analogue signals we used to use? How is it possible to have so many television channels and fast enough internet connections to allows us to download information from the web? Where is it all going to end?
