Here you will find a selection of web links to resources covering space science and satellites. Discover the science that is going on at Universities, Government Laboratories, and the Science Funding Agencies that contribute to new discoveries in space. Many scientists spend a lot of effort explaining their cutting edge science to the general public, and the web allows us all to find more about exciting discoveries and new developments in science.

  • The Space Science and Technology Department (SSTD)
The Space Science and Technology Department (SSTD) at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory (RAL) carries out an exciting range of space research and technology development. With significant involvement in over 40 space missions in recent years, SSTD is in the forefront of UK space research. RAL, which is partly funded by the Particle Physics and Astronomy Research Council, provides world-leading research and technology development, space test facilities, instrument and mission design, and studies of science and technology requirements for new missions. The web site contains an overview of the SSTD programmes in Space Physics, Atmospheric Science, and Space Instrumentation.
  • Mullard Space Science Laboratory (MSSL)
The Mullard Space Science Laboratory, part of University College London, is the UK's largest university space research group, carrying out research in areas ranging from the Earth's climate to the most distant galaxies in the known Universe. MSSL supports an extensive outreach program to the general public and to schools and colleges, for example hosting the Sunblock99 solar web site aimed at 11-16 year olds. From the MSSL website you can download a range of space-related resources including 'Beginners Guides' and Powerpoint slides and images.

  • AuroraWatch UK
AuroraWatch UK is a web site run by the University of York that allows you to monitor geomagnetic activity in real time, and shows when aurora may be visible from the UK. The site offers a free Aurora Alert email service to warn you whenever aurora are likely to be seen across Britain. These alerts can be forwarded to your phone as a text message, so you will know when to look out for aurora wherever you are. Find out about Coronal Mass Ejection, Geomagnetic Storms, and how to make your own 'pop-bottle' magnetometer to detect disturbance to the Earth's magnetosphere.

  • Science @ NASA
Science @ NASA's motto is to Inform, Inspire, and Involve. To achieve our goal, we produce materials at multiple reading levels, languages and for multiple purposes. We hope that once informed, you will be inspired to get involved!

  • ESA
The European Space Agency, provides a vision of Europe’s future in space, and of the benefits for people on the ground that satellites can supply. It also develops the strategies needed to fulfil the vision, through collaborative projects in space science and technology.
  • ISS
The International Space Station will provide an orbital laboratory for long-term research, where one of the fundamental forces of nature - gravity - is greatly reduced. In addition, world class research in biology, chemistry, physics, ecology and medicine can be conducted using the most modern tools available.
  • HST
The Hubble Space Telescope is a cooperative program of the European Space Agency (ESA) and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) to operate a long-lived space-based observatory for the benefit of the international astronomical community. The Space Telescope Science Institute is the astronomical research center responsible for its operation.
