Fantastic Plastic!

Fantastic Plastic! is an exciting lecture for schools that was developed at the University of Surrey with funding from the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council. Using lively demonstrations and hands-on activities, the Fantastic Plastic! lecture shows the properties of polymers and explains how they are used in a wide range of applications. It has been seen by thousands of school pupils across the south of England, presented by Averil Macdonald.
After the lecture, teachers often asked “How do you do that?”. They wanted to know where to get the materials and how to carry out the demonstrations. They also had questions about the underlying concepts of polymer science. In response to many requests from teachers, Dr. Joe Keddie (Reader in Physics) and Dr. Averil Macdonald (educational consultant) developed a teaching resource for teachers on the theme of Fantastic Plastic!
This resource - which contains video clips, a PowerPoint presentation, step-by-step directions for the demonstrations, and background notes – was put on a CD-rom and distributed free-of-charge to schools in England and Wales. The project was funded through the University of Surrey’s Widening Participation Fund.

Here are some still photos taken from the video demonstrations:

If you are a science educator, you can request a free CD-rom containing the teaching resource simply by sending an e-mail to Dr. Keddie (j.keddie@surrey.ac.uk) along with your full postal address.
